Each track certainly features a soundtrack quality, yet the album flows together very nicely. Once again, panflutes, piano and orchestral sounds, somewhat more dramatic than my other nature titles. During the year of 1994, I had the opportunity to be working with Australian photographer Steve Parish. We were working on a project together - a CD of my music accompanied by a coffee table book of Steve’s fabulous images. We both set out to capture the heart of Australia’s last untouched wilderness areas. This album is the result of that exciting year. I travelled all over the country with my trusty DAT recorded - setting up before dawn in some extremely remote areas, waiting to record the dawn chorus of birds and creatures - wandering the vast Kakadu lands late at night, sitting by the glorious shores of our East Coast. When I had completed my ‘wandering’, I ended up with hours and hours of tapes and I set about editing those. As I pieced together the natural symphony, I was already hearing in my mind the pieces I would write. I could sense a way in which I could create a musical symphony to the tempos I was hearing from nature. I hope I have succeeded in this and that I have produced for you a recording that brings the wonder of this unique land into your home. The main track, Whispring Sea, is one of my personal favourites and one that I usually perform at concerts. Being at the ocean’s edge is a powerful magic for me. Nothing is as awe-inspiring as the sun rising on a velvet sea, the crash and rhythm of waves, the salty taste on your lips. I love to sleep by the sea. For me, the seashore is always a healing place, where I find time to stop, clear my mind and re-energise. Whispering Sea is a collection of pieces that I wrote over a few years. Some were written during a concert tour, some in the studio and two tracks are re-recordings of songs from my album Seashore Sunrise. I have a very close connection to every track on this album - especially the title track and Sunset Together. I do hope that you enjoy Whispering Sea. Although a very private gathering, some speakers have allowed us to share here some of what they had to say about Tony, and how he touched their lives. Leonardo da Vinci once said… “As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so life well lived brings happy death.” Tony’s life was truly Well Lived. He seized the carp with both hands, wouldn’t let go, then went with the flow. I guess he was Piscean after all. A renaissance man, a journeyman — a man of honour, integrity, compassion, humility, and a man with a thoroughly wicked sense of humour. Anyone who spent time with Tony would have noticed his liking for jokes, especially practical jokes, but note also that his practical jokes were never intended to humiliate — always to enlighten, to surprise us beyond our static patterns, our habits, to waken us to the vibrant reality resonating within and around us. Essentially, he wanted us to experience the Here and Now. For Tony knew, when we live fully in the present moment, we are timeless. We gain perspective over such things as the cycle of birth, life and death, and, no longer something to be feared, it becomes part of an intricate, harmonious pattern. The song of the universe. The song of Love. Tony knew well the sound of that eternal harmony and devoted his energies to try to reproduce portions of it so that the rest of us may share in tasting the opus he heard. Many masseurs and natrual therapists use Summer Rain and I think it's a great bedtime album. I met Paul Clement eighteen years ago, when we discovered a mutual “attunement” for each others’ guitar playing styles. The album was produced from the original pieces Tony was recording during the early stages of his illness when he was experiencing significant changes to his wellbeing physically and mentally. I remember many chats about our childhood, our humble beginnings, our successes, people who had passed through our lives and those who had stayed. We talked about our happy times, fun adventures, the joy of being parents and the life lessons we had learned and cherished. We also spoke about the darker times, when life was tough, full of confusion, our fears, grief and even our sadness. Going through that time of transition, I know every piece of music on this album is a reflection of those conversations. I believe even though Tony was writing about his own life experiences he was also encouraging us to look more closely at our own lives and not only treasure the happiness, joy and great love we share but to also acknowledge our vulnerability, our fears and sorrows, because they are just as important. There is no pretending, these recordings are emotionally raw but they also leave you with a sense of peace and comfort which Tony was well known to do. It is an honour and a privilege to release Tony’s final album to you and I only hope these musical conversations find a special place with you that reminds you that we are all part of a continuing ever-renewing journey. Tony’s first album, Journey, was released in 1987 under the banner of ‘creative relaxation music’. Only ever available on cassette and now a collector’s item sold for hundreds of dollars for those lucky enough to find a second-hand copy, Journey was the album that started it all. Tony had been working with psychologists and masseurs to create music for inducing a relaxed and calm response within the listener. Feedback from therapists provided Tony with invaluable information about sound, melody and the positive effect music could have on the listener.
